Detoxification

Edward Esko gave a fantastic lecture last Saturday on foods that help to detoxify your body and promote wellness. Unfortunately, we are all exposed regularly to heavy metals, carcinogens and other toxins. But through diet, we also can reduce the toll they take on our bodies. Mr. Esko identified several foods that can detoxify your body. Below are excerpts from a handout Mr. Esko distributed at the lecture. If you would like a full copy of the handout, please email CASE.

Excerpts:

Sea vegetables offer superior protection from radiation and heavy metal poisoning. Studies at McGill University identified components in sea greens like kelp and alaria that bind to heavy metals and chemical pollutants in the intestinal tract allowing them to be safely eliminated from the body. Sea vegetable are so effective that the US Atomic Energy Commissions recommends that people consume two or three ounces of sea vegetables daily for protection against radiation poisoning.

Seaweeds are rich in anti-oxidants that protect us from degenerative diseases such as cancer, as well as slow down the aging process. Seaweeds also bind with toxic heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and radioactive strontium - one of the most hazardous pollutants todays. But be careful not to collect your own sea weeds - it is better to purchase them from commercial beds that are sited away from polluted areas.

During WWII, a Japanese doctor named Tatsuichio Akizuki, MD, in Nagasaki, fed his staff and patients a strict diet of brown rice, miso, tamari soy soup, wakame and other sea weeds, hokkaiko pumpkin and sea salt, while limiting sugar. No one succumbed to radiation poisoning while many others located further away suffered severe radiation poisoning. McGill researchers later determined that sodium alginate in the sea vegetables eliminated radioactive strontium from the body. Scientists in Israel and in Russia have found similar protective results from sea vegetables. Amazing!

Miso soup contains an ingredient called zybicolin, discovered in 1972, that detoxifies and eliminates pollutants from the body, including heavy metals and radioactive elements. Miso can help to protect against adverse side effects from radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Miso also counteracts the adverse effects of traffic pollution, tobacco, and environmental pollution and can detoxify their harmful influences.

Brown Rice is also important to detoxifying diets because it is easily digested and rich in soluble fiber allowing nutrients to be more effectively absorbed and helping to maintain a healthy pH in the intestine.

Burdock is known as a liver tonic that cleans and builds the blood, is rich in minerals and can cleanse the body inside and out. It is used as food by many cultures, most often the root.

Black and green teas can also be effective detoxifiers.

We are very grateful to Mr. Esko for sharing his wisdom and expertise with us. Please remember though this is for informational purposes and for educational use. None of these products or statements have been evaluated by the FDA and we do not claim to cure, prevent, or treat any disease.
